Belmonte Builders, an award winning builder based in Clifton Park, NY recently initiated a “Daylily Rescue Event” on a property known as Saxton Gardens. The late Stanley E. Saxton was a legendary daylily hybridizer and long-time Saratoga Springs resident. Saxton was a Skidmore Music Professor for more than 40 years who became interested in daylilies while trying to find flowers that would grow at his Adirondack camp. His experimentations and explorations led to the development and registering of hundreds of distinctive daylilies. Peter Saxton, who worked alongside his father, had carried on the daylily business at the corner of State and First streets in Saratoga Springs since his father’s death in 2002 at the age of 97. The Saxton garden included approximately 250,000 daylilies.
After the Saxton family relocated to North Carolina, Peter Belmonte, President of Belmonte Builders acquired the property to be used as a future new home site. To avoid the destruction of the lilies, the Belmonte team, with the assistance of Lynn Dakin of Saratoga Springs, coordinated the “Daylily Rescue Event”. The event invited several local non profit organizations including Rebuilding Together Saratoga, Habitat For Humanity, The Heritage Garden Club, Division Street Elementary School, 4-H andSaratoga Row Association to harvest the lilies to be used for fundraising purposes or to be used to beautify projects they are working on in Saratoga County.
The “Daylily Rescue Event” was held the week of June 23rd. The organizations mentioned were invited to come to the site and harvest an area dedicated to their charity. It is the hope of Belmonte Builders that the history and uniqueness of these Saratoga born flowers will continue to grow throughout the community from this donation.
Belmonte Builders built the first house in the Albany, N.Y. region to be certified Gold under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes program.
