Alright, you’ve taken the time to make sure your house is safe and secure for your new bundle of joy, but what about the fun part? The tradition of preparing the nursery (or “nesting”) not only ensures your home is ready for your baby, but can also help parents adjust and settle into their new roles as well. This week, we’re going to help you ensure the task is fun and rewarding and never daunting or tedious.
First off, decide on a general theme or motif. This isn’t to say that you can’t have some flexibility in your decorating, but having some sort of plan will help focus your scope and give you direction. From there, establish a focal point and work out from there. Maybe you have a beautiful crib or rocking chair that you really love, or maybe your nursery has some great floor to ceiling windows. Find something that makes your room special and work out from there.
Pick out your curtains and bedding before you paint the room. There are infinitely more paint colors than there are textile options, so it’s much easier to match your walls to your baby’s sheets than it is the other way around. Also, be sure to use low odor VOC free paint to avoid exposing your baby to dangerous fumes.
Ceiling fans have been proven to reduce the the risk of SIDS by over 70%, so consider installing one of those if your nursery doesn’t have one already. While you’re at it, a light with a dimmer can be a huge asset when it comes to checking on your little one throughout the night. A good night light also goes a long way both for safety and comfort.
Setting up your baby’s nursery can be a hugely rewarding experience! Taking the time to prepare can go a long way in making your transition into parenthood as smooth and manageable as possible.
